Before you start, it is a good idea to practise so you are familiar with our system. Use a scrap pane of glass and a sharp object or sandpaper to scratch the glass, then use our system a few times to practise. Watch the demo videos on our YouTube channel for a full demonstration.
Before polishing it is a good idea to tape up the edges of frames and seals to protect them from splashes. This also makes it easier to clean up when finished.
When removing the scratch using an abrasive disc, you want to use the right-hand side of the pad with a slight gap under the left-hand side.
When you feel that the abrasive disc has stopped working, check the face of the abrasive disc and remove any build-up of glass dust, stop by stopping the polishing device and tapping the face of the abrasive disc to make the dust to fall off. Another method is to spray a small amount of water on the glass surface and continue the sanding process.
Using a felt polishing pad for 5-10 minutes, scuff the pad with scissors and apply small amount of water. This will help you get better results and will stop the pad from hardening.
When polishing, don’t be afraid to experiment with speed and pressure. Lower down the speed to about 1000-1400 rpm and put the pressure to 5-10 lbs to help the polishing compound brake down more quickly and get better results.
Remember that using too much water while polishing will dissolve the compound. Using a mist spray is an ideal solution.
Try not to stop on the same spot every time when removing the scratch with the abrasive disc; this will prevent you from causing distortion on the glass.
The easiest way to determine the depth of a scratch is to use your fingernail and slowly run it over the scratch. If your fingernail does not catch on the scratch, it will be classified as a light, minor scratch. If your fingernail catches on the scratch, it will be classified as a medium to deep scratch. If your fingernail catches on the scratch and gets stuck, it will be classified as a heavy scratch.
No - Textured and coated glass cannot be repaired.
No - Polished panes of glass will look no different to untouched panes.
No - The scratch will have already weakened the glass by straining it. We were asked to provide independent testing for London Underground and were able to prove that the GP-WIZ system actually strengthens glass. This is because you are making the glass structurally sound by removing the scratch.
Yes - No problem at all. Toughened glass is actually easier to repair. Our system works very efficiently on tempered glass thanks to its density. Our scratch removal system works equally well on laminated, curved, plate and mirrored glass. Our systems are capable of handling any thickness of glass, including single glazing.
Yes - Absolutely. We have specially designed 2" (50 mm) and 3" (75 mm) backing pads that enable you to get the same brilliant results when working on curved glass. Our system is compact and can reach places that are usually considered to be unreachable.
Yes - The polishing process will not take any of the tint away, since the tint is part of the glass and runs all the way through.
Mineral deposits, acid etching and chemical damage can be removed with great ease.
No - All repairs can be carried out without the need to remove the glass, unless it is hard to access.
Polishing light to medium scratches can take 5-15 minutes. Of course, the larger and deeper the scratch, the longer the process.
It depends on the glass surface. If you are working on a standard glass unit, we recommend checking the temperature once every minute. If you are working on tempered glass, you can do it less often.
Use a laser thermometer or use your hand by placing the back of your hand against the glass. If the glass feels hot, stop and let it cool down before continuing.
You may need to use more compound and polish for a little longer.
You might be using too much water.
Try using a bit more pressure for a longer period of time.
You might need to reduce the polishing speed to 1000-1400 rpm.
You may need to use the GP50 again for a bit longer and then re-polish
